Scholarship Description: Uppsala UniversityAbout 100 000 people have Alzheimer's disease in Sweden today and the number of patients is expected to increase due to an ageing population. It is difficult and hazardous to obtain biological samples from the brain, and thus, most diagnostic methods for Alzheimer's disease are based on cognitive tests or measurements of different biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid. Sampling of cerebrospinal fluid is complicated and rather unpleasant for the patient. Hence, there is a need for reliable and non-invasive methods for diagnosis, for studying disease progression and to quantify effects of new treatments in Alzheimer's disease. The medical imaging method positron emission tomography (PET) is a very attractive diagnosis method as no samples are required. Instead, PET images, based on the spatial distribution of PET-ligands measured with a PET-scanner, visualize targets in brain. The over-all aim of the project is to develop new PET-ligands for quantification of changes in the brain in Alzheimer's disease. The project will include both in vitro and in vivo work, as well as statistical and pharmacokinetic analysis of the generated data. The PhD student will mainly focus on his/her research education. However, other responsibilities such as teaching and administrative tasks may also be included (max 20 %).
