BARELY three months after its conduct, the National Examination Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2012 June/July Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examination Council (NECO), Prof. Promise Okpala, who   released the result yesterday in Minna, lamented that despite efforts at curtailing examination fraud, some candidates and their schools still indulged in the nefarious activity, necessitating the blacklisting of about 13 schools that cut across seven states of the federation, including, Anambra, Cross River, Imo, Kano, Benue, Nasarawa and River states.
Releasing the result, the Registrar said over one million candidates sat for English Language, out of which 554,884, representing 49.33 per cent passed at credit level, and 478,605, representing 42.55 per cent had passes.
Also in Mathematics, 1,124,879 sat for the subject, out of which 567,011, passed at credit level, representing 50. 41 per cent and 418,351, had passes, representing 37.19 percent.
Similarly, other core subject areas, including, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, and others also recorded significant improvements compared to previous exams conducted by the organisation.
He pointed out that despite the security challenges in some states of the country, which necessitated the stoppage of the examination in those states by 20days, the results were being released within 60 days from the day of the last paper in Kaduna State.
He however expressed satisfaction that members of the syndicate who were involved in forging NECO's certificates had been arrested even as he insisted that the extensive security features on the NECO certificate made it difficult for it to be successfully forged.
Okpala reiterates the commitment of the council in living up to its mandate of delivering examination, whose results could be trusted worldwide, assuring that "no stone would be left unturned to ensure integrity in the conduct of our exams.
The NECO boss expressed the determination of the organisation towards providing quality examination delivery geared towardselevating the standard of education in Nigeria.                        Guardian newspaper

At least there is an improvement from the past mass failure but a lot still needs to be done.
