FRSC - New Driver’s Licence: Oronsaye and others commend FRSC

As the Federal Road Safety Corps fine-tunes arrangement to commence enforcement of the new driver's licence from 1st October, 2013 , former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye has joined the league of prominent Nigerians and public officers who have given endorsements to the Corps' initiative to restore the integrity of the driver's licence.

Mr. Oronsaye who was at the FRSC headquarters Abuja yesterday to process his driver's licence, was taken on a facility tour of the Corps by the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka and was visibly delighted with the level of deployment of Information and Communication Technology by the FRSC in road safety management.

The former Head of Civil Service was particularly impressed with the Corps' facilities for real time response to road traffic crashes and summed up his impression this way " a lead agency that should be supported by government. I am very impressed with the facilities that I have seen".

In the same vein, the Commander, Garrison Command of the Nigerian Army, Major General Obida Ettan who was on a familiarization visit to the FRSC, said "the FRSC has stood out among other government agencies, having ploughed through Information and Communication Technology to achieve optimal service delivery".

According to the Garrison Commander, "there is a congruency between safety and security, hence the need for a synergy between the Corps and other security agencies to create mutual platforms to ensure information exchange to achieve the goals of our nation's democracy"

Speaking further, he said that the Nigerian Army will buy-into the FRSC Information and Communication Technology initiatives through sharing of data to checkmate the nefarious activities of unscrupulous elements. He also said that the two agenies (FRSC and the Army) will collaborate in the area of capacity building in order to acquaint their personnel with global best practices in road safety and security management.

In his reaction, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka commended both the former Head of Service and the Army Garrison Commander for visiting the FRSC . He stressed the need for the Army to scale up its data base on road condition in the country through a partnership with the Corps in order to enhance its operations during emergency situations.

The Corps Marshal also added that adequate knowledge on road signage will enhance movement of Military personnel to points of conflict while information on traffic count will further ensure hitch-free deployment and urged the Army to buy-into the new number plate through the registration of its operational vehicles.

It will be recalled that prominent Nigerians and public officers who have visited the FRSC to process their driver's licence include the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, House Leader, House of Representatives, Hon. Mukilat Akande, State Governors of Enugu, Oyo, Ekiti, Anambra and Benue and the former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye and serving Ministers.

In a related development, the Corps Public Education Officer, Jonas Agwu, Corps Commander has urged vehicle owners to buy-into the new driver's licence and reiterated that deadline for the current driver's licence still stands at 30th September, 2013 while enforcement for the new one will commence on 1st October, 2013.

He added that the FRSC has adopted various strategies and platforms to conscientise the Nigerian motoring public on the new driver's licence regime, as part of measures to raise public consciousness for the new scheme which forms part of the Corps' repositioning process of motor vehicle administration scheme in Nigeria.

Continuing, Jonas urged Nigerians to initiate plans to process their driver's licence now in order to avoid a late rush as the Corps has put in place, measures to ensure seamless processing and issuance of the new driver's licence through a one-stop-shop approach at 140 driver licensing centres spread across the FRSC formations in the country.
