At last, ASUU finally suspends its long over-due strike action but...

On October 9, 2009, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria suspended its strike action for 2 weeks. The Union embarked on an indefinite action across the country on June 23, 2009 to protest against government's failure to allocate 26% of annual budget (for both States and Federal) to educational sector following earlier agreement. ASUU also cited need to address the brain drain in the Nigerian tertiary institutions, staff welfare, as well as university autonomy as reason for the industrial action.
