AKURE—ELEVEN students of Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Ondo,  Ondo State, said to have masterminded Monday's violent protest where 50 vehicles were allegedly destroyed, have been arrested by  the police.

The institution was shut late yesterday by the management over alleged destruction of property worth millions of naira by the students.

Police authorities led by Police Commissioner Edgar Nanakumo, visited the institution yesterday to assess the extent of the damage by the students.

The students claimed that they took to the streets following the mysterious death of 20  of their colleagues in the last one month and perceived insensitivity of the institution's management.

School buildings were badly damaged while buildings housing banks and eateries on the school campus were destroyed by the rampaging students.

Police Image Maker in the state, Adeniran Aremu, said the arrested students had been taken to the Akure Police Headquarters for interrogation.

Aremu noted that "a unit of anti-riot policemen has been stationed at the college to protect the staff and other residents while investigations into the cause of the mayhem have already been commenced by detectives."

Also, the school's authorities have set up a committee to look into the matter, identify the culprits and determine the extent of damage done to college property and submit its report within three weeks.
