Britain great place to visit, study and work – Envoy

The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Andrew Lloyd yesterday at the launch of the UK great campaign in Nigeria said that the country is a trading nation and a key connection in the global market place.

The GREAT campaign promotes Britain abroad as a place to invest in and as a place to visit, highlighting all that is best about the UK.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the launch, he disclosed that Britain today is the world's second largest exporter and fourth largest importer of commercial services.

"Our business-friendly, stable political environment attracts investment from around the world – from 54 countries in 2010-11. Entrepreneurs are attracted to the UK too, as it takes just 13 days to set up a business here.

"Britain today is a great place to visit, study and work. A great place to invest and do business. In this extraordinary year, when we celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and host the Olympics and Paralympic Games, we invite you to take a fresh look at everything Britain has to offer" he said.

As a trading nation, he added that Britain has embraced integration with other cultures, quickly absorbing foods, traditions and words from overseas.

"We've always thrived on the exchange of goods, ideas and people.Our people are diverse, warm and welcoming. English is our national language and spoken by more than 600 million people worldwide and we're also home to over 160 nationalities speaking over 300 different languages" he explained.

Great Britain: a small island with big ideas:

According to the BHC, Britain is a global leader of innovators; from DNA to MRI to IVF, adding that the UK has won 76 Nobel prizes, and has the largest life sciences sector in Europe. We are also a trading nation and a key connection in the global marketplace.

2012, Lloyd said is an extraordinary year for Britain. From Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the eyes of the world will be on Britain, joining our celebrations and cheering their athletes.

The GREAT Campaign, he explained was utilising the unprecedented global attention on Britain during 2012 to promote the country as a world-class destination for business, investment and tourism.

It would be recalled that the campaign was launched by the British Prime Minister, The Right Hon David Cameron in September 2011.

The campaign will continue after the London 2012 Games focusing on 12 areas of British excellence (Trade and Investment: Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Creativity, Technology, Knowledge, Green. Tourism: Heritage, Sport, Shopping, Music and Countryside.
