The media office of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed El-Rufai's book, 'The Accidental Public Servant,' 'as a collection of fiction, half-truths, exaggeration and reflection of selective memory.'

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai stated, at the presentation of the book in Abuja, that the conspiracy of silence, a situation where public officers keep mute over challenges in governance, should not be encouraged.

He said the people have a right to know the details of how they are being governed and their leaders must be willing to talk openly about issues.

However, a statement by Atiku's media office described Mr. El Rufai's claim that he almost resigned as the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) because of alleged persistent pressure and interference by former vice president, Mr. Abubakar, who was then the chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, as a contradiction of what the former FCT minister said at the Senate public hearing on the BPE in 2011.

The statement maintained that the former FCT minister had claimed that he had a special relationship with former President Obasanjo, which gave him direct access and the discretion to bypass the Council on Privatisation headed by Atiku in order to get the approval of the president.

The controversy over the book may have stemmed from the fingers pointed at several former government officials over shady conduct while in office and also the author's stand on the demolition exercise that swept over the FCT during his tenure as minister.

But speakers at the presentation argued that regardless of criticisms, public officers must be accountable and open to debates on their performance.

There were lamentations over the total disregard for merit and competence of many public officers and the need for leaders to be transparent and accountable.
