At least 7 students of Itori Comprehensive High School, Itori, were on Wednesday killed in a motor accident that occurred at Ewekoro in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was learnt that the truck, with plate number LAGOS XZ 628 AKD, was said to be coming from Abeokuta, the state capital, when it veered off the median and ran into the students.
Confirming the incident, the Itori Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Fatai Bakare said that only seven students were killed at about 5 p.m by an articulated carrying granite which swerved off its lane and rammed on the students while they were returning from school.
The victims, five boys and two girls, were submerged by the granites when the vehicle somersaulted, Bakare said.
He described the accident as unfortunate, saying that the students were "innocent passers-by".
Bakare advised motorists to be cautious at all times to guard against avoidable accidents.
Eye-witnesses said that the inability of the local government to assist the injured angered the residents and parents of the victims, who then went on rampage vandalising about 50 vehicles caught in traffic in the area.
Some of the students told NAN that they resorted to violence, due to "the nonchalant attitude of the Council Chairman, Mr Dele Soluade, and security agencies to rescue the victims".
Armoured Personnel Carrier belonging to the Ogun State Police Command later arrived at the accident scene to restore order and to evacuate the victims.
In the meantime, corpses of victims have been taken to the nearby morgue of the local government, while several injured students were reportedly rushed to Ifo General Hospital.
