Major offensive kills 56 terrorists at Alafa forest, 7 others die on Lake Chad Islands

Nigerian security forces have launched ground and air operations on terrorists’ locations in the forest at Alafa, about 21km from Bama in Borno State. 
 
A release from the Director of Defence Information in the Ministry of Defence, Chris Olukolade (Major General) on Monday December 30, 2013 indicates that over 56 terrorists have died in the ensuing intensive fight over the weekend.  Adding, two soldiers were wounded in the operation which was meant to track the fleeing terrorists. 
 
“Acting on intelligence reports which indicated renewed efforts by the terrorists to establish a new camp in the forest locations, the land and air operations has inflicted heavy casualty on the insurgents as indicated by the high level in the loss of  their men and materials.  Air and land bombardments are continuing in different locations where terrorists have been reportedly sighted,” he said. 
 
According to him, troops of the Multi-National Joint Task Force have foiled attempts by terrorists who were gathering at the Lake Chad Island with a view to engage attack on some Nigerian communities.  He added that seven of the terrorists died while others fleeing in different directions towards Niger and Chad Republic have been trailed by troops. 
 
He further noted from intelligence reports that some of the wounded terrorists were sighted in a canoe heading towards Tumbun Telkandam in the Chad Republic.
