Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has warned the opposition in the State against unnecessary politicization of his administration’s policies and programmes that are targeted at ensuring the welfare and well-being of the people.
He gave the warning while speaking at his investiture as the Great Grand Patron of the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Oyo State chapter and the turning of the sod of AOPSHON Castle, in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The Governor, in apparent reference to the petrol tanker fire disaster that occurred at the popular Molete Under Bridge in Ibadan last week-end, said that the casualty figure would not have been high had the people heeded his administration’s warning to stop trading on the road.
He said that it was unfortunate that the traders allowed themselves to be deceived by the opposition into returning to Molete from the Scout Camp Market where they had been relocated free of charge, aside the N20 million interest-free loan given to them by the State Government.
“Whatever policy or programme fashioned out by our government is in the interest of the generality of our people. Unfortunately, our detractors will politicize everything even at the detriment of the people who are supposed to be the ultimate beneficiaries of such policies and programmes.”
“It is high time the opposition stopped all this politics of deceit if they actually have the interest of the people at heart as they have been claiming. It is apparent that the casualty figure would have been grossly reduced if the traders had not deceived into going back to the street,” he said.
Governor Ajimobi said that his administration was not just building roads in the State, but was doing urban renewal and modernizing the State, stressing that the Urban Renewal Programme had improved the safety, security, health and the aesthetics of the State and enhanced foreign investment.
He described the teachers as moulders of the nation, the engine room of every child and the foundation of development, saying that with the high caliber of the teachers in the State, “we have a future in Oyo State’’.
The Governor, while expressing appreciation for the honour done to him, promised that his administration would continue to ensure that the welfare of teachers was given priority.
Speaking earlier, the State Chairman of AOPSHON, Mr. Bolaji Adeleke reeled out the several programmes so far executed by the Ajimobi administration to ensure the welfare of teachers in the State.
He said his investiture as the Great Grand Patron of his association was a way of appreciating Governor Ajimobi as a friend of the teachers in the State.
