Where Did It Go Wrong For Sofiane Boufal At Morocco?

MoroccoHerve Renard has unveiled Morocco’s 23-man for the World Cup, with Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal the most notable omission.

The squad was revealed by the Moroccan football federation on Thursday, with Medhi Benatia, Hakim Ziyech and Younes Belhanda the key names in a strong squad

24-year-old Boufal, who scored twice in 26 league outings for Saints this season, has been cut along with Zakaria Labyad, Yacine Bammou and Walid Azaro, after not starting a league game since February.

Renard has opted for a 23-man squad, with Oualid El Hajjam, uncapped Nouassir Mazraoui and Youssef En Nesyri named as three stand-by players.

There’s Premier League representation in the form of newly promoted Romain Saiss of Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Real Madrid’s Achraf Hakimi, Amine Harit (Schalke 04) and Hamza Mendyl of LOSC Lille provide an undercurrent of youngsters featuring in Europe’s major leagues.

Amiens’ Youssef Ait Bennasser has made the cut after recovering from a thigh injury sustained in March.
