2013 Heinrich Boll Scholarships in Germany for International Students

The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards scholarships to international students who gained their university entrance qualification from a school outside of Germany who wish to study a Masters or PhD Degree in any subject in Germany.

Host Institution(s): State or state-recognized institution of higher education (university, college or equivalent) in Germany

Field(s) of study: The scholarships are awarded for all subjects. Having in the past awarded scholarships mainly to students of the humanities, social sciences, art, and culture, the Foundation is now, in addition, particularly interested in students of economics, law, engineering, science, mathematics, and journalism.

Number of Scholarships: The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards around 950 scholarships a year divided among Germans and international students. About 5/6 of them go to undergraduates and graduates and 1/6 to PhD students.

Target group: The scholarship program allots scholarships to international students. Special (but not exclusive) focus regions are: Central/Eastern Europe, EU neighbourhood/CIS; Middle East/Northern Africa; transition and newly industrialised countries as well as conflict regions worldwide.

Scholarship value/inclusions: €750 per month for Masters students and €1000 per month for PhD students.

Eligibility:
By 1 September 2013 applications can be handed in by:

A. Applicants for a student scholarship

Students of all subjects who are pursuing a FIRST university degree and who gained their university entrance qualification from a German school ('Bildungsinländer/innen')

1. Student scholarship – general: Applications are possible before you begin your study programme or within the first three semesters.

  • Special (but not exclusive) focus groups are:

  • First-generation students, students with a migrant background, or students from universities of applied sciences ('Fachhochschulen').

  • Students in MINT study programmes (mathematics, informatics, natural sciences, or technical subjects), especially with an environmental focus (e.g. environmental studies, climate studies, renewable energies etc.).



  • 2. Student scholarship – journalism programme
    ,,Medienvielfalt, anders: Junge Migrantinnen und Migranten in den Journalismus"Applications are possible before you begin your study programme or within the first three semesters.

  • The programme is aimed at students with a migrant background who want to become journalists. Funding is not limited to students in a journalism studies programme.



  • B. Applicants for a doctoral scholarship (PhD)

    1. Doctoral students of all subjects who gained their university entrance qualification in Germany and who wish to do their doctoral studies in Germany:Applicants must provide proof that they have been accepted as a doctoral student by an institution of higher education in Germany or an EU country.

  • Preference will be given to dissertation projects related to the working areas of the Heinrich Böll Foundation.



  • 2. Doctoral scholarships: Focus programme "Transformation Research"
    Doctoral students from Germany who would like to apply for the focus programme "Transformation Research".

  • Formal requirements like in paragraph B.1.

  • Applications are possible before you begin your Master's programme or within the first semester (at the time of application).

  • Applicants must have already obtained a first university degree.

  • Good or very good knowledge of German is a requirement. The selection workshops are generally held in German (if a scholarship is granted, additional German language courses can be financed).



  • B. Applicants for a doctoral scholarship (PhD)



    1. Doctoral students of all subjects who gained their university entrance qualification in Germany:Applicants must provide proof that they have been accepted as a doctoral student by an institution of higher education in Germany or an EU country.

  • Applicants must provide proof that they have been accepted as a doctoral student by a German institution of higher education.

  • Preference will be given to dissertation projects related to the working areas of the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

  • Good or very good knowledge of German is a requirement. The selection workshops are generally held in German (if a scholarship is granted, additional German language courses can be financed).
