The bursaries are available to South African Honours, Masters and Doctoral students who are registered for full time study in any area of Engineering (with the exception of Architecture), Commerce and Business Management at the University of Cape Town.

Tenure of award: 1 year. No renewal is for a second year is guaranteed.
Academic Criteria: 60% mark and above for undergraduate, Honours or Masters coursework.
Other Criteria: Financial need
Value: Variable - The value of the bursaries to be awarded are at the discretion of the Trustees.

The John Davidson Educational Trust has funds available for bursaries/financial assistance for postgraduate students studying in Engineering, Commerce and Management at UCT. The funds are available for overall assistance, or for particular grants for tuition, board and lodging and/or prescribed reading material.

Preference will be given to students with suitable records of academic performance who are, in the opinion of the Trustees, in need of financial assistance. The Trustees will take into account the applicants' career plans, and whether or not the applicants intend to make an ongoing contribution in the Southern African economic and social environments.
Application Procedure:
1. Completion of the John Davidson Educational Trust Application Form which is available from the Postgraduate Centre & Funding Office
2. Applicants are required to submit a short essay of not more than 300 words, as part of the application. This essay must describe the contributions Applicants hope to make to Southern African economic and social environments, once they have completed their course of study. Specific reference should be made to dealing with practical ways of making the English language an accessible means of communication within your discipline, amongst all staff, and management and staff, in the job context.
3. Certified copies of all tertiary academic transcripts must be attached.
4. A full budget giving income and expenditure for the 2011 academic year must be attached.
5. A certified copy of your SA Identity Book must be attached.
6. A brief curriculum vitae no longer than 1 X A4 page.

All Awards made by the John Davidson Educational Trust which are accepted by students, are subject to compliance with the rules and policies of the Postgraduate Studies Funding Committee of the University of Cape Town. The application, short-listing and award management and reporting processes will be managed by the Postgraduate Centre and Funding Office of the University of Cape Town. The Trustees reserve the right to make no awards at all. Successful candidates accept will be required to accept the bursaries subject to the CONDITIONS OF AWARD (See Application Form).
