2011 SPDC Niger Delta Post-Graduate Scholarship Scheme at University College London

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited and UCL have collaborated to provide scholarships for students from the Niger Delta States wishing to study a Master's programme as outlined below. The schemes objective is to provide opportunities for postgraduate study in the UK for young students and professionals, who demonstrate both academic excellence and the potential to become leading professionals in the oil and associated industries.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:
•   display intellectual ability and leadership potential;
•   have a high standard of English, ie at least 6.5 in IELTS and meet the UCL's language requirements;
and
•   be aged between 21-30 years;
•   originate from one of the Niger Delta States in Nigeria, namely Rivers, Delta or Bayelsa and currently reside in Nigeria;
•   intend to return and take up permanent residence in Nigeria after completion of the proposed programme of study
•   intend to study one of the following programmes:
MSc Chemical Process Engineering
MSc Mechanical Engineering
MSc Civil Engineering
•   have obtained a degree of at least an equivalent standard to a UK upper second-class Honours degree
•   be neither a current nor former employee (who have left employment less than five years before) of SPDC,  the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies or Wider Perspectives Limited, or current employee's relatives;
•   not already have had the chance of studying in the UK or another developed country.

Application Deadline and Procedure
For the academic year 2011/12 UCL can nominate for up to three candidates.

Candidates must complete the following Application Form

The closing date for application forms and any supporting documentation to reach UCL is 28 March 2011.

Selected candidates will then be invited to attend an interview with representatives of the sponsor in June.

Value, Benefit and Duration of Scholarship
The scholarship provides a maintenance stipend equal to the British Council Rate (c. £12,528 for 2010/11), full tuition fee funding, return airfares, arrival allowance and a thesis allowance (if required). Awards are tenable for one academic year and are only available for the taught postgraduate programmes listed above.
