Scuola Normale Superiore is offering up to 94 fully funded PhD scholarships for Italian and International citizens at university campuses (Pisa and Florence). The PhD programmes last for three years with the exception of Biophysical Sciences and Neurosciences, which last for four years. All programmes begin 1 November 2014. The scholarships will be awarded on basis of students' academic work and interviews. All students admitted to PhD program receive full financial support. This includes tuition, fees, and a cost-of living stipend (14,084 euro per year, plus free meals). All students will be assigned further funding for their research activity and travel.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in the following fields: Classics, History of Art, Philosophy, Modern Literature and Philology, Modern and Contemporary History, Renaissance Studies, Neurosciences, Biophysical Sciences, Methods and Models for Molecular Sciences, Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Political Science and Sociology.

Eligibility:

-
Highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for fully-funded positions within a doctoral program.

-Applications are invited from candidates irrespective of their citizenship who: will have completed an Italian laurea magistrale or equivalent degree from outside Italy within 31 October 2014; were born after 31 October 1984

All PhD programs offer unique conditions for scientific growth. All students admitted to our PhD program receive full financial support. This includes tuition, fees, and a cost-of living stipend (14,084 euro per year, plus free meals). Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her PhD degree. All students will be assigned further funding for their research activity and travel. Each PhD course offers scholarships reserved to students that graduated outside of Italy.

Number of award(s): The Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) invites applications for 94 PhD scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year in the following fields and university campuses:

-Pisa: Philosophy – 6 scholarships, Modern Literature and Philology – 8 scholarships, Classics – 7 scholarships, History of Art – 6 scholarships, Modern and Contemporary History - 6 scholarships, Physics – 7 scholarships, Condensed Matter Physics – 7 scholarships, Mathematics – 7 scholarships, Financial Mathematics - 5 scholarships, Methods and Models for Molecular Sciences - 6 scholarships, Neurosciences – 7 scholarships and Biophysical Sciences – 8 scholarships

-Florence: Renaissance Studies (joint degree with the Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento) - 4 scholarships and Political Science and Sociology (joint degree with the University of Bologna) - 10 scholarships

Duration of award(s): The PhD programmes last for three years with the exception of Biophysical Sciences and Neurosciences, which last for four years. All programmes begin 1 November 2014.

All students will be assigned further funding for their research activity and travel.

Selection Criteria: The scholarships will be awarded on basis of students' academic work and interviews. Each Admissions Committee will assess candidates' research aptitude and their academic preparation for the programme using a 100-point scale to evaluate an applicant's qualifications, research proposals and interview. Candidates who obtain at least 70/100 in this global evaluation will be considered as suitable for doctoral study at the Normale. These evaluations will be carried out on the candidate's application overall.

Notification: Interviews will be held in July and October.
