The Scholarships are funded by the Carnegie Corporation and form part of a grant established to recruit and support individuals who have an intention to remain in academia. The intention is to develop a cohort of trainee academics and thereby contribute to growing the next generation of academics in order to strengthen higher education in Africa.
Applications are invited from candidates who have achieved a Master's degree, who will register or are recently registered for the Doctoral degree in Economics.
Successful candidates will be required to:
• register for full-time Doctoral study in the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town;
• comply with the approved policies, procedures and practices for the postgraduate sector;
• and enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with her/his supervisor and adhere to the plans and agreements therein.
Value and Tenure: The scholarships are valued at R140000
The tenure of the scholarships is for two years. Renewal for the second year is contingent on satisfactory academic progress.
Academic Criteria:
Applicants must:
• have graduated with a Master's degree in the relevant area
• be interested in going into academia upon the completion of their PhD degree;
• be from Africa;

• a letter of application;
• a CV;
• academic transcripts (no certificates)
• the names and contact details of 2 academic references; and
• a letter of support by the prospective or current supervisor
Selection Processes: Selection will be made by a sub-committee of academics in the School of Economics.
The closing date for applications is 10 February 2011.
