Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding doctoral scholarship for applicants of developing countries. Students can pursue their  PhD degree level at ZEF in Bonn, Germany. The tenure of PhD scholarship is of one year and extended for up to three years. The scholarship will cover living, research as well as travel costs. Applicants have to participate for 6-9 months in West Africa and for analysis and writing-up period of the dissertation the applicants have to be at Bonn, Germany. The deadline for application submission is August 11, 2013.

Scholarship Description: Land management decisions determine the production of agricultural and forestry outputs. But they also have implications for the production of non-marketed ecosystem goods and services such as water purification and regulation. Shortages of ecosystem services can substantially curtail the livelihoods of particularly the rural poor in developing countries who vitally depend on land productivity and natural resources. The successful candidate is expected to advance the field of environmental valuation and apply innovative valuation methodologies to assess the monetary impacts of land management decisions with respect to non-marketed ecosystem services in the West African Sudanian Savannah region. The scholarship is part of the newly created West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use.

Duration of award(s): The successful candidate will participate in the interdisciplinary and disciplinary courses of the ZEF Doctoral Studies Program from October 2013 – February 2014 in Bonn. (S)he will develop an individual research proposal until April 2013. Depending on the data requirements of the proposed research the work may entail 6-9 months of field work in West Africa. During the analysis and writing-up period of the dissertation, the candidate will be based at ZEF in Bonn.
