Title: 2012 Elizabeth and Arthur Reich Scholarships for Undergraduate Studies

(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2618253/ForumPhotos/Rutgers_USA.PNG) This endowed Fund was established in 1992 with a gift from the Estate of Arthur Reich, Class of '28, School of Law, Rutgers-Newark, in loving memory of his wife, Elizabeth Reich, a former resident of Piscataway, New Jersey. Mr. Reich, who died in 1990, practiced law in New Brunswick and maintained a strong interest in investing in the New Brunswick community.

In recognition of Arthur's commitment to improving the quality of life for the New Brunswick community, and with the leadership of Donald Sheil, GSNB '75, GSM '84, the Elizabeth and Arthur Reich Fund was established to provide scholarship assistance and encouragement to academically talented students who are either African American or Hispanic-American or residents from select urban communities who are enrolled at the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences to pursue careers in environmental sciences or related studies.

Eligibility

Scholarships are awarded to full-time SEBS undergraduates including entering first-year students of the school majoring in the following six academic majors only: Bioenvironmental Engineering; Ecology and Natural Resources; Environmental Policy, Institutions and Behavior (EPIB); Environmental Sciences; Marine Sciences; and Meteorology. Applicants must also have demonstrated academic performance at the high school and who have also some financial need as determined by the Selection Committee and an interest in related activities.

Eligible students must be either:
a.   African American and/or Hispanic-American U.S. citizens are eligible, regardless of their place of residence.

b.   Graduates of public or private high schools in Atlantic City, Camden, East Orange, Elizabeth, Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark, New Brunswick, Passaic, Paterson, Perth Amboy, Plainfield, Union City or Trenton, regardless of their race or ethnicity are also eligible.

Number/Amount of Awards

The Selection Committee has discretion in annually awarding any number of scholarships, subject to the amount of endowment income for awards. The following categories apply:
•   $1,000-$2,000 awards for entering first year students, renewal annually, as appropriate. No special activities are required the first year.
•   $1,500-$2,500 awards offered as department scholarships (assistantships) for sophomores to be exposed to academic and hands-on learning experience(s) in the student's field of interest. The scope of the assistantships will be developed by the respective departments.
•   $2,000-$3,000 awards to juniors who participate in departmental research, a summer internship at the NJDEP, or a similar experience. Students will be encouraged to use assistantships for credit towards their degrees.
•   $2,500-$4,000 awards to graduating students who participate and complete a senior thesis, George H. Cook, independent study, or research problems course as part of their graduation requirements. Theses awards will be designated as: Elizabeth Reich Award, Arthur Reich Community Award, or Donald E. Sheil Law/Policy Award.

Selection

A selection committee will assist in the selection and placement of students for assistantships, internships, and related activities focusing on issues in environmental sciences or policy areas.
