However, the same cannot be said about Drupal. Drupal is one CMS which a tad bit more complicated and updating it is not as easy as other systems are. However, you do not need be whiz kid to accomplish this task and with the knowledge of a few simple steps, you can easily update your site and handle your Drupal core updates very conveniently. First step is to not panic when you see the error message as it is surprising only when you're new to the CMS. Once you are used to the site, the error message will not seem strange and you will be able to tackle it easily. The most important thing which you have to do is to keep all the backups for your site files as well as the database. If by chance you do not have the backups, you first need to go to the cPanel File manager and back up site files. To back it up, you need to save and compress it and then download a copy for security. Next is to back up databases which can be easily accomplished by Backup and Migrate Module or use phpMyAdmin in cPanel and export your database there.

Second step is to upload the latest version of Drupal Core and extract the Drupal Update Folder. Once you do that, open the folder and delete the SITES folder, the .htaccess file and the robots.txt. Deleting these three things are very important for your update process as these files, if overwritten can cause problems, especially the Sites folder. Once you are done, put your site on the maintenance mode by ticking the checkbox in admin/config/development/maintenance. Once you are done with this, its time to update your files.            

Third step is to copy the files from the folder which has been updated to the site folder and you can do this by clicking on the MOVE button on the toolbar in the cPanel File Manager. Once you are done with the next few steps, the last one would be to press on Move File which will complete the task of overwriting the old files. Your last task would be to check the default.settings.php file to see if it has been updated with the latest release.

The fourth and the last step is the easiest and all you have to do is take your site out of the maintenance code. Once this is done, the process of updating is complete.
