DAAD Merit Scholarships for Master and PhD Students from Sub-Saharan Africa

The DRD at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town offers DAAD merit scholarships for for PhD students in the fields of Governance, Public Policy, Public Management or Development Studies. These degrees will be done by thesis, but successful applicants will also have the opportunity to attend selected courses at the IEE in Bochum, Germany. The closing date for scholarship applications for PhD candidates to commence their studies in January 2012 is the 1st of August 2011. Applicants will be informed by the first of September 2011 whether their applications had been successful or not. Successful applicants can then apply for admission to the PhD before the 15th of September and can also apply for university accommodation.

Applicants should have an excellent academic record in the field they are applying for, or in a related field of study. Only students with an average upper second or first class grade for their previous degree(s) will be considered.

• A CV: Curriculum Vitae Template 
• An academic transcript from your last university,
• Certified copies of all academic certificates
• Two academic references, to be submitted separately by the referee, and clearly indicating your name
• A research proposal

Please also notify us by e-mail if you submit a hard copy by mail, as mail can sometimes be slow and unreliable. It is much safer to submit by email. If you send a hard copy, please allow about 6 – 8 weeks for it to reach us.

For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record the DRD offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year.

Scholarships are available for full-time students interested in any of the following programmes:
•   MA and M Econ in Development Studies: MA Development Studies
•   Master in Public Administration: MPA
•   MA in Development Management (Bochum Programme): M.A. Development Management (Bochum)
•   PhD in International Development Studies: PHD IDS

Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro plus travel allowances for Master candidates and 900 Euro plus travel allowances for PhD candidates. More information about requirements for application and application procedure is provided below.

Requirements for application and application procedure:
•   Scholarship applicants are adviced to carefully read about the specific entry requirements and course application procedure of the programme of their choice. The information is available from the respective programmes sections.
•   Candidates for the Masters Programme in Public Administration (MPA), the MA and M Econ in Development Studies as well as PhD candidates in the fields of Governance, Public Policy, Public Management or Development Studies can submit their scholarship application before they register with UWC through the online application procedure.
•   Please submit a letter of application, the DRD-SA application form (see below), a CV, an academic transcript from your last university and two academic references. Applicants will be informed about their applications by the 31st of October 2011.
