South African Research Ethics Training Initiative (SARETI), a University of KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg) project, funded by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health is inviting applications for masters scholarships. SARETI will offer full scholarships, including living and transport expenses, to up to four students from Africa each year. The SARETI Masters programme is a Masters of Social Science degree (MSocSc: Health Research Ethics) which takes 2 years to complete, of which approximately 10 months are spent with SARETI and the remainder at the trainees' home institutions.

Scholarship can be taken at: South Africa (A full-time Masters degree takes 2 years to complete, of which approximately 10 months are spent with SARETI and the remainder at the trainees' home institutions.)

Eligibility: These scholarships are available to professionals involved in health ethics and health research and who are resident in Africa.All professionals whose work is intimately involved with health research ethics, either as senior researchers, Ethics Committee Members, as institutional representatives responsible for the oversight of health research, but also journalists, lawyers, philosophers, and social scientists, and others involved with health interventions and health research. All applicants (including self-funded applicants) need at least a Bachelors (honours) or 4 year equivalent degree to be eligible to enroll for a Masters degree. In addition, current and future experience and involvement in the ethics of health research is essential.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Students of Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe.) can apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship Description: SARETI is a University of KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg) project, funded by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health to offer advanced learning in health research ethics. The programme is aimed at scientists, members of Research Ethics Committees/IRBs, public health personnel, social scientists, philosophers, ethicists, health journalists, lawyers, and other professionals whose work impacts on health. SARETI is an African programme in health ethics that offers modular, flexible and hands-on learning. Trainees are enabled to develop the expertise required to ensure that health research in Africa has the welfare of individuals and of communities as its primary focus. SARETI's educational programmes vary from one-week intensive short courses, to a three-week programme aimed at Research Ethics Committee members, offering a Masters programme (an MSocSci with majors in health research ethics). SARETI announces the availability of scholarships that offer full financial support (travel, course fees, accommodation, stipends) for four Masters' degree students annually. The scholarships are available to professionals involved in health research ethics and health research and who are resident in Africa. Applications from self-funded or sponsored students are also welcome.

Duration of award(s): Scholarships are offered for two years.

What does it cover? SARETI announces the availability of scholarships that offer full financial support (travel, course fees, accommodation, stipends) for four Masters' degree students annually.

Selection Criteria: Selection is generally based on academic merit and availability of places.

How to Apply: With the application please attach the following:

-A brief CV (not more than 5 pages).

-A 2-page essay (not more) motivating your choice in research ethics training.

-A letter from your employer specifying:

-Support for your proposed course of study

-Ensuring appropriate employment or promotion in return

-Ensuring time and opportunity for you to complete the research project after returning home.

-Copies of selected publications of yours in health research (Maximum of 5) (Reference to indexed journal articles is sufficient; for un-indexed publications, please send hard copy).

-Photocopies of your highest qualifications (NB certified copies or originals will be needed later on when you formally enroll).

-Certified copy of your Passport.
