Title: URC Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 2011 at University of Cape Town
Post by: sparrow on Jul 23, 2010, 03:01 PM
The University of Cape Town invites applications for a limited number of Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to be taken up at the University during 2011. The value of the Fellowship is R175 000 per annum.

All South African and foreign candidates are eligible, but preference will be given to applicants who graduated from Universities other than UCT. However, applicants who graduated from UCT at BOTH undergraduate and postgraduate levels are ineligible.
Only applicants who attained the PhD degree no longer than 5 years ago, and are not yet in academic or research posts and who have not previously held postdoctoral appointments are eligible. There is no restriction on any particular discipline or field of research, but applications from other African countries and from women and black researchers will be given preference. It is crucial that applicants' research interests and faculty needs are in line with those of the host department.

Applicants who have not yet graduated with the PhD degree must provide proof that the PhD thesis has been submitted by no later than 15 September 2010. Such proof must be accompanied by a statement by the supervisor that the degree is likely to be achieved.
The Fellowships are based on academic merit and the number and quality of the applicant's peer-reviewed publications will be taken into account. The Fellowships are in place to provide support to candidates who will undertake academic training and are tenable for a maximum of 12 months. Applications for renewal for one further year will be considered, but only in competition with new applications. Renewals are NOT GUARANTEED. The Fellowship value is fixed at R175 000 for the full academic year and includes any relocation expenses. The Fellowship carries no benefits and a directive for tax exemption will be applied for by UCT on behalf of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the agreed research as well as optional but limited teaching duties as part of professional development. Successful candidates will not be expected to perform any service to the Department of the University of Cape Town in return for the Fellowship.

Please complete the PDOC01 Application Form. This is available from the Postgraduate Centre and Funding Office, University of Cape Town or from the internet at

- The applicant's full curriculum vitae and a full list of publications. Reports from three referees, which must be submitted in sealed envelopes.

Although fully completed applications must be submitted directly to the Postgraduate Funding Office, applicants are urged to contact the appropriate Head of Department in the first instance if at all possible. Information on faculty structure and academic departments may be found on the UCT website at http://www.uct.ac.za (http://www.uct.ac.za)

All applicants are subject to the policies, procedures and rules surrounding the postdoctoral sector at the University of Cape Town.
