Nigerian government at the federal level has commenced the implementation of Gas Master Plan to enhance proficient utilisation of the country's gas resources. Government had earlier set-aside the sum of N240 billion ($1.5 billion) to boost gas development and its availability. FG also directed oil companies operating in the upstream sub-sector to prioritize domestic gas supply to check domestic shortages. The supply increase is also aimed at achieving FG's target of generating 6,000 megawatts of electricity by 2009. Nigeria currently has install capacity of 5,200 mw, but limited gas supply, and issues relating to water level have continued to challenge the target.
