The founder of the KDE project, Matthias Ettrich, has been awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit by the German government.  KDE is an international project creating Free software and is most known for its attractive and flexible desktop environment.  KDE applications run on Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, mobile devices and even a few dinosaur systems.  The applications are available in all Linux and BSD distros and chances are you are running at least one right now.

KDE and KDE applications are built using Trolltech's Qt cross-platform application and UI framework.  Nokia recently acquired Trolltech to focus even more on Qt-based mobile applications.  Building your graphical application on Qt will allow it to run on any system including systems currently immune to 99.9% of malware, past and present.

The KDE desktop is more extensible, modular and flexible than any of its counter parts.  Any competent corporate IT department should be able to whip up tailor made desktops to help maximize worker performance.  You get tailored suits and clothes, tailored hardware, why not tailored IT environments?

The medal is in recognition of Matthias' work spurring innovation and spreading knowledge for the common good.
