PhD position on Biological N fixation and N loss as N2O and N2 in white clover based dairy production systems

Job Description : Project description: This project aims to close some important gaps on the knowledge of N flows in Irish white clover based diary production systems. The researches include (1) measurement of biological N fixation using 15N isotope dilution method, (2) determination of N loss as N2O and N2, (3) evaluation of N2O emission from biological N fixation, (4) determination of N2O emission from nitrate leaching. Results of this project will benefit estimate of biological fixed N (BFN) input into white clover based dairy production systems, increase the knowledge about the environmental impact when mineral fertilizer N (MFN) is replaced by BFN, and provide new information about indirect N2O emission from nitrate leaching, which will help to estimate the contribution of indirect N2O emission to total national N2O emission inventory.

Funding: This study is funded by the EU collaborative project– Legume futures under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Student stipend is €21,000 per annum.

Location: The successful candidate will be registered with the Department of Botany, Trinity College Dublin and will be based primarily at the Teagasc, Moorepark Dairy Production Research Centre, Fermoy, Co. Cork.

Requirements: The applicants should hold a BSc or MSc degree in environmental science, soil ecology, biology, microbiology, biogeochemistry, or comparable; have interests in field and laboratory work; fluent English language skills are required. A full driving licence is an advantage.

Supervisors: Dr James Humphreys (Teagasc, Moorepark), Dr Gary Lanigan (Teagasc, Wexford), Prof Mike Williams (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Dejun Li (Teagasc, Moorepark)

Application: Applicants should send (1) a curriculum vitae with a covering letter detailing qualifications and experience and (2) names and full contact details of at least 2 references to:
