October 1, 2012 was the 52nd independence celebration of Nigeria. Nigerians in diaspora prayed, rejoiced and celebrated in honour of their beloved country. In Finland, the celebration was generally postponed till Saturday, October 6 when everyone would have time to join the events.

Afrofinland was in Turku, Finland to capture the event as Nigerians, Africans and lovers of Nigeria around Finland gathered to felicitate. The event was put together by the Association of Nigerians in Turku and was graced by prominent Nigerians who have been here for decades, a lot of international students, and Finns from all walks of life.

There was a series of programs planned for the event among which was a cultural dance show presented by an Igbo cultural dance group from Imo, Nigeria. The dance show featured two masquerades dancing and displaying. Their art was spectacular exactly as the masquerades you will see in Nigeria.

Other events on the day included award presentation to recognize some members of the Nigerian community in Turku, who have contributed to the growth of their association in one way or the other.

There was lots of eating and drinking at the event. Finally, the floor was opened by the executive committee of the Association for dancing. A lot of guys killed it on the dance floor. According to the attendees of the event, it was a big success.
