Postgraduate Research Associateships at University of Cape Town, South Africa

The Research Associateships have been established to provide prestigious awards to reward excellent student researchers, who are registered for full-time study and to recognise and support the work of their supervisors.

The purpose of the Research Associateships is to align reward and recognition of the research undertaken by students and their supervisors, with the University's strategic objectives to be research-led and to be a transforming university.

2. ELIGIBILITY

o Only students who are registered for full-time study for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Doctoral degree
o UPGRADES: Where a student has upgraded from Masters to Doctoral, she/he is eligible only in the 1st and 2nd year of DOCTORAL study (notwithstanding the number of years that she/he was registered for Masters).
o Only students who are registered for full-time study in the 1st and 2nd years of a Master's degree by dissertation only
o Only students who are registered for full-time study in the 2nd year of a Master's degree by coursework and research.
o Students registered for full-time study in the Commerce Faculty for a 4-year Doctoral degree (whereby the 1st year consists of coursework and is certificated) are eligible and may be nominated in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year.
o Students who meet the above criteria must be NOMINATED by their supervisors. Individual application from students will not be accepted.
o Full time Staff members are NOT ELIGIBLE

Students registered for the following degrees ARE NOT ELIGIBLE:
o Honour's
o FIRST year of Master's by coursework o THIRD (or beyond) year of Master's study
o Master's degrees by coursework only
o Master's degrees with less than 50% research component.
o FOURTH (or beyond) year of Doctoral study

3. NOMINATIONS AND SELECTION CRITERIA

o Students who comply with the Application and Selection Criteria may be nominated.
o Only eligible students may approach their Supervisors with a request to be nominated.

NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Suitable candidates must be nominated by their Supervisors
The Postgraduate Research Associateship 'Nomination Form' must be completed and signed.
The following supporting documents must accompany the application form:
o Academic transcripts i.r.o students who have not graduated from UCT (NO CERTIFICATES)
o A report from the nominated student on aspects of the research already completed, signed by the Nominated Student and the Supervisor.
o A report from the Supervisor on the academic progress of the nominated student, signed by the Supervisor and Head of Department
o A full list of publications
o A C.V. of no more than ONE A4 page
