National Humanities Center offers fellowships for international students in the field of humanities in USA. Applicants must have doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Young scholars as well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply, but they must have a record of publication, and new PhD should be aware that the Center does not normally support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. The Center accepts applications from scholars outside the United States. The Center seeks to provide at least half salary and also covers travel expenses to and from North Carolina for Fellows and dependents. The application deadline is October 1, 2013.

Study Subject(s): Fellowships are provided in the field of humanities. Most of the Center's fellowships are unrestricted. Several, however, are designated for particular areas of research. These include a fellowship for a young woman in philosophy and fellowships for environmental studies, English literature, art history, Asian Studies, and theology.

Eligibility: Applicants must have doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. Eligibility for scholars applying from outside the United States: Successful candidates typically earned a Ph.D. in a humanities discipline from an accredited university at least five years prior to applying for a fellowship. Fellowships are awarded to established scholars, meaning that successful candidates usually have published at least one single-author monograph or a significant body of peer-reviewed scholarship. The Center does not fund post-docs. There is no upper age limit, but senior candidates must be actively engaged in scholarly research which will eventuate in significant publication. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Both US and International Students can apply for these fellowships.

Each year, several scholars from countries other than the United States come to the Center as part of the cohort of Fellows.

What does it cover? Fellowships are individually determined, according to the needs of the Fellow and the Center's ability to meet them. The Center seeks to provide at least half salary and also covers travel expenses to and from North Carolina for Fellows and dependents.

Selection criteria: Applications are read by specialists in their fields and by an interdisciplinary committee of distinguished scholars. Criteria of evaluation are: (1) the significance of the proposed research; (2) the quality of the research proposal in definition, organization, clarity, and scope; (3) the quality or promise of the candidate; and (4) the likelihood of the project's being successfully pursued at the National Humanities Center. The selection committee seeks scholarly excellence and a good mix of disciplines, ages, regions, and institutions.

Notification:  The Center will notify in mid-February of the results of the competition.

How to Apply: The mode of applying is by post. The following items must be postmarked:

-5 collated copies of the application form, your curriculum vitae, your 1,000 word project description, a one-page tentative outline of chapters, and a short bibliography

-3 copies of the financial information form

-3 letters of recommendation, to be mailed by your recommenders

-a self-addressed blank postcard
