Amazon is bringing mobile Web applications to its Appstore for Android.
The Amazon Mobile App Distribution (https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/webapps.html)program announced this morning that developers creating apps for the Kindle Fire tablet and select Android devices will be able to publish to Amazon's app store. That means that developers will not have to create specific native Android apps for the Kindle Fire and employ HTML5 to distribute applications in Amazon's app ecosystem.
Amazon renders Web apps on the Kindle Fire through Google's open source Chromium engine. Web apps will be able to employ Amazon's in-app purchasing purchasing application programming interface as well as use the company's digital currency, Amazon Coins.
Amazon's HTML5 runtime supports most major features in the standard except for features that are not supported by the Kindle Fire (https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/webapps/runtime-feature-support.html), such as hardware components like GPS, camera access, accelerometer and or the microphone. Amazon also does not support WebGL or the Fullscreen API in HTML5.
Developers can start building HTML5 apps for the Amazon Appstore by downloading the software developer kit (https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/thank-you.html) and testing their Web apps through Amazon's developer site.
