House of Representatives' Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal has said that the leadership of the House was not against the President over the2013 budget.
He said the disagreement between the Houseand the executive was on the benchmark.
Tambuwal spoke yesterday at Irun-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State while sympathising with one of the House members, Hon. Ganiyu Dauda, over the death of his wife.
He said the House was only interested in due process and wanted the executive to do the right things.
The Speaker said: "We are not against the President. We are only demanding from Mr. President what is right. If he gets it right, it is for his own benefit because the credit will goto him.
"We are all in government to achieve the same goal. When a co-traveller is demanding that a proper thing should be done, nobody should see that as being antagonistic.
"We are not at loggerheads with the Presidency. The Presidency has submitted thebudget estimate and we are looking at it."
He pointed out that the basis of disagreement was on the benchmark, saying the House had explained its opposition to thebudget implementation.
Tambuwal said: "The executive wanted the budget to be implemented at $75 per barrel with deficit, but since we know that we will get up to $80 per barrel, we want it to be pegged at $80 so that we will not go and be borrowing from banks."
He noted that reducing the deficit will give entrepreneurs the opportunity to make use of bank loan in order to develop the economy.
"It is better to reduce the deficit and allow our entrepreneur the opportunity to make use of the bank loans to develop the economy. It will not be in our own interest for our leaders to be borrowing," the Speakersaid.
On why the House has not treated the budgetas a People Democratic Party (PDP) affair, Tambuwal said: "There is nothing like family affairs in governance. We are not here on ourown. We are there to represent our people and discharge our constitutional responsibility."
