The UNFPA Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme is intended to provide on-the-job training for young professionals who wish to obtain practical experience in development assistance. UNFPA South Africa Country Office is offering a position for a Junior Professional Officer (JPO) intercourseual Reproductive Health and Rights.
Supervision: The JPO will be under overall supervision of UNFPA Representative /Deputy Representative in Pretoria and direct supervision of National Programme Officer at UNFPA Sub Office in Durban, Kwa Zulu- Natal Province, for career development and administrative issues.
Content and Methodology of Supervision:
1. Job-related guidance in a timely, constructive and appropriate manner is provided on a continuous basis.
2. The functions of all staff and what is required of the JPO and how this relates to the overall mandate of UNFPA will be explained.
3. All necessary information, rules, policies, equipment and other tools required will be provided.
4. The JPO will have opportunities to use his/her skills and abilities fully and to contribute to the work of the office to the best of his/her abilities.
5. Supervisors will take an overall interest in the JPO's development and provide encouragement and advice on how the JPO can realize his/her potential.
6. There will be opportunities for the JPO to express his/her views on work-related matters.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Junior Professional Officer will support UNFPA and KwaZulu Natal DoH and stakeholders, in key areas of women's health and adolescents and youth, particularly as it relates to UNFPA's support in the areas of contraceptive and family planning and improved maternal health including teenage pregnancy and gender based violence and improved maternal health:
1. Support the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of women's health, adolescent and youth as well as prevention of HIV and AIDS.
2. Support the creation of knowledge by analysing on-going programmes, documents lessons learned best practices and replicable strategies and actively shares and applies this knowledge.
3. Contribute to the development ofinnovative strategies in the SRH within the ICPD agenda based on national and provincial priorities and in collaboration with other UN agencies and alignment with national SRH programmes and UNFPA global mandate;
4. Contribute to the development process and review of provincial and district implementation plans and ensure coherence and alignment with national SRHR programmes;
5. Establish network of relevant partnerships with provincial and district stakeholders and participate in relevant provincial and district forums that may be required at that time.
6. Prepare advocacy materials on women's health, adolescent and youth as well as prevention of HIV and AIDS.
7. Administrative work, including arranging for meetings and database management.
Qualifications and Experience:
1. Postgraduate degree in health sciences, or public health.
2. At least 2 years of experience in intercourseual reproductive health programmes.
3. Prior experience in developing countries is an asset.
• Language skill: Fluency in English language and ability to speak any UNDP official language is an added advantage.
4. Fluency in English. Ability to write clearly and concisely
5. Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds
• Age: Must not be more than 32 years on the date of application
• Technology skills, including word processing, database application (excel) presentation software (power point) and internet appreciation.
• An interest in adapting to varied physical environments; and a desire to work with people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds;
• Evidence of ability to think strategically, work independently and demonstrate a sense of self-assuredness.
• Respect for the UN principles of the United Nations Charter and the participating UN organisation's mission statement
Learning Elements (should be defined in form of measurable results)
Upon completion of the two-year assignment, the JPO will be able to:
• Appraise and prepare projects addressing maternal health interventions
• Write assessment reports on the subject of comprehensive reproductive health and rights
• Monitor progress in intercourseual reproductive health, using District Health Information System (DHIS) and Dev Info.
• Prepare project budgets on the basis of annual work plans.
