The Fellowship Scheme, funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, was established by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), after extensive consultations with leading African institutions of higher education, and other organizations devoted to the development of humanities scholarship in Africa.

The Project was formally inaugurated at the University of Ghana in September last year, where the 2009 fellowships were launched. It has also been launched in Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

THE AFRICAN HUMANITIES PROGRAMME
The African Humanities Programme seeks to offer fellowships to young faculty and researchers in Africa to pursue high quality doctoral and post doctoral research in the Humanities.

It seeks to

1) offer fellowships to individual faculty and researchers to pursue exemplary doctoral and post doctoral research in the humanities
2) provide awards that enable scholars to publish, and
3) help establish a network of expert advisors and peer reviewers.

The project, whose first year has been very successful, is modeled after an ACLS Humanities Programme in Eastern Europe, which has so far provided over 600 fellowships to individuals doing exemplary work in the humanities.

Disciplines covered by the fellowships include history, linguistics, language, literature, anthropology, philosophy, religious studies, folklore, the performing arts, interdisciplinary studies related to the humanities, etc.

2010 Fellowships

At this year's event, a report will be presented on last year's applications, and potential applicants for the 2010 fellowships will be given an orientation.

The two-day event, scheduled for 2nd and 3rd July at the Institute of African Studies, Legon comprises a formal launch of the 2010 fellowships, a workshop on proposal writing; and experience sharing by Ghanaian winners of the 2009 fellowships. A few panelists for the 2009 fellowships will be available to explain assessment procedures.

Time: 8.30 a.m to 4.30 p.m each day

A detailed program schedule will soon be released.
