The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is offering training grants for applicants from low- and middle-income country (LMIC). These grants are available for postgraduate training leading to MSc and PhD degrees focused on disciplines relevant to implementation research. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must have no more than three and five years post-graduation for men and women respectively. Online application must be submitted by 7 February 2014.

Study Subject(s): Grants are awarded in disciplines relevant to implementation research (such as, but not limited to epidemiology, social sciences, bio statistics, health economics, health/medical education, health information systems, community and environmental health).

Course Level: Grants are available for postgraduate training leading to MSc and PhD degrees.

Scholarship Provider: The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR).

Scholarship can be taken at: The training may take place in the home country of the applicant, another low- and middle-income country (LMIC), or a high-income country.

Eligibility: Only applications from individuals who are nationals of and based in LMICs will be considered. Specific focus will be given to applicants from least developed countries. The target age bracket is 25-30 years for MSc grants and up to 35 years for PhD grants. Applicants must have no more than three and five years post-graduation for men and women respectively. -Preference will be given to candidates who have a provisional acceptance or course registration in an accredited university in addition to being employed in their home institution. Priority will be given to local or regional training. Applicants already registered for a doctoral degree in their home country requesting support for their thesis research should provide evidence of registration, research project proposal (with ethical clearance if applicable), as well as an itemized fully justified budget up to a maximum amount of US$ 20 000.

Rep, Malawi, Togo, Eritrea, Mali, Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Armenia, India, Samoa, Bhutan, Kiribati, São Tomé and Principe, Bolivia, Kosovo, Senegal, Cameroon, Lao PDR, Solomon Islands, Cape Verde, Lesotho, Sri Lanka, Congo, Rep., Mauritania, Sudan, Côte d'Ivoire, Micronesia, Fed. Sts., Swaziland, Djibouti, Moldova, Syrian, Arab Republic, Egypt, Arab Rep., Mongolia, Timor-Leste, El Salvador, Morocco, Ukraine, Georgia, Nicaragua, Uzbekistan, Ghana, Nigeria, Vanuatu, Guatemala, Pakistan, Vietnam, Guyana, Papua New Guinea, West Bank and Gaza, Honduras, Paraguay, Yemen, Rep., Indonesia, Philippines and Zambia are eligible for these training grants.

Scholarship Description: The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites applications for postgraduate training grants leading to MSc and PhD degrees focused on disciplines relevant to implementation research (such as, but not limited to, epidemiology, social sciences, bio statistics, health economics, health/medical education, health information systems, community and environmental health).

Duration of award(s): The training award is valid for the current academic year or the next year immediately following the offer and cannot be deferred for any reason.

What does it cover? The grants will cover:

-Return economy air fare (where necessary) between the home country of the applicant and the host university/institution;

-Tuition fees and basic medical and accident insurance (usually obtained through the university or sponsor approved medical insurance scheme);

-A monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses (stipend) if grantee is not based in home country and cost of recommended learning materials (reference text books and laptop);

- When necessary, a language training course to improve the grantee's academic performance;

-Support for PhD research project thesis or applied research to improve an area of public health of national relevance, up to a maximum amount of US$ 20 000.

Selection Criteria: All applications will be screened for completeness and eligibility by the TDR Secretariat according to the requirements stated in this call and the submission form. Applications will be assessed and scored by external reviewers on the basis of the CV of the applicant, relevance of training to home institution, career development plans and experience to justify requested training. Project proposals will be assessed for scientific merit and relevance by external reviewers. The evaluation will be shared with the Research Strengthening Group (RSG) which will recommend funding, taking into account budget ceilings and geographical and gender balance.
