Title: Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS)
Post by: MyInfoStride on Dec 07, 2009, 11:23 PM
ORSAS was set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1979 to attract high-quality international students to the United Kingdom to undertake research. The Scheme is funded through the four UK higher education funding bodies (for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

From 2006 onwards, participating Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have received an annual grant to fund ORSAS and selected their ORSAS award holders internally. The grant is allocated by formula and reviewed periodically with regard to postgraduate research student recruitment and related data. The current formula allocations are set to run from 2006-07 until the end of 2008-09.

Prospective applicants should contact institutions directly for information on how to apply for an ORSAS award. Follow the links to learn more about ORSAS in England (http://www.orsas.ac.uk/england/), Northern Ireland (http://www.orsas.ac.uk/ni/), Scotland (http://www.sfc.ac.uk/research/SORSAS/sorsas.aspx) and Wales (http://www.orsas.ac.uk/wales/).
ORSAS awards beyond 2009

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) will not be able to fund ORSAS after 2009. This change applies to England and Wales only; other UK Funding bodies have yet to make a decision about the future of the ORSAS awards in Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
