This scholarship will be awarded to a student from a Southern African country for postgraduate Master's study for the 2011-2012 academic session.

Award

This scholarship was set up in September 2010 to mark the retirement of Mr Melvyn Cornish following a career of 32 years at University of Edinburgh, with the last 8 years as University Secretary.

The scholarship has a value of £2,000 and will be tenable for one academic year.

Eligibility

The scholarship will be awarded to applicants from Southern African countries who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master's programme of study at the University of Edinburgh. Applicants may apply from the following countries:

    * Angola
    * Botswana
    * The Democratic Republic of Congo
    * Lesotho
    * Malawi
    * Mozambique
    * Namibia
    * South Africa
    * Swaziland
    * United Republic of Tanzania
    * Zambia
    * Zimbabwe

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, the international equivalent of a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree at undergraduate level.

In addition to the above academic qualifications, the selection panel will also take into account the financial circumstances of applicants to ensure that as far as possible a student's financial situation does not impede a university education.

Candidates should indicate within the personal statement of their scholarship application, the benefits and impact of undertaing their particular programme of study on the development of the candidate's home country.

Applying

Completed application forms must be received by Scholarships and Student Funding Services no later than 1 April 2011.

Eligible applicants should complete an online application form.
