Applications are invited for research grants from South African citizens to pursue PhD and postdoctoral research program. AIMS South Africa and CERECAM at the University of Cape Town have two fully funded PhD Scholarships and one Postdoctoral Fellowship in the area of Mathematics available from July 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD Scholarships are for a period of three years and the Post-doctoral Fellowship is tenable for two years. The application deadline is 25th June 2014.

Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD research program while fellowship will be available for postdoctoral research program.

Eligibility: Educational requirements:

-PhD Scholarships-Master's degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics or Engineering Sciences with a strong mathematics component;

-Post-doctoral Fellowship – Doctoral degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics or Engineering Sciences with a strong mathematics component;

-Competencies required;

-Good communication skills;

-Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team;

-Fluency in English;

Scientific writing skills

Further knowledge/skills required (at least five of the following);

-Numerical analysis; Fluid flow in Porous media or fluid mechanics; Programming in C, Matlab or any other high level languages; Partial differential equations; Stochastic partial differential equations; Error estimates; Stochastic calculus; Functional analysis and Sobolev spaces; Subsurface reservoir simulation; High performing computing; Computational statistics; Computational finance; Finite volume methods; Finite element methods.

Scholarship Open for International Students: South African citizens can apply for these research grants.

Scholarship Description: The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa and the Centre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics (CERECAM) at the University of Cape Town, currently have two fully-funded PhD Scholarships and one Post-doctoral Fellowship available from July 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter. The mathematics subject area is concerned with Subsurface Energy and Uncertainty Quantification. These positions are available through the AIMS –ARETÉ Junior Chair, which is supported by the Robert Bosch Foundation. The PhD Scholarships are for a period of three years and the Post-doctoral Fellowship is tenable for two years. The value of the PhD Scholarships will be R120,000 per person per annum while the Post-doctoral Fellowship award ranges between R180,000 and R220,000 per annum, subject to qualification and experience of the successful applicant. PhD Scholarships and Post-doctoral Fellowship awards are tax-free.
