VP Osibanjo Warns Against Proliferation Of Illegal Colleges Of Education

The Vice-President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, has urged the National Commission for Colleges of
Education (NCCE) to expedite action toward improving the quality of teachers and checking the proliferation of illegal colleges of education in the country.

Osibanjo made the call at the opening ceremony of the Silver Jubilee Celebration and National Conference on Teacher Education of NCCE held on Tuesday in Abuja.

Osibanjo, who was represented by Malam Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, commended NCCE for its efforts at the development of teacher- education at the sub-degree and basic education levels.

"I want to use this opportunity to draw the attention of the NCCE to the public outcry on the quality of the holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) teachers in our schools.

"It is my hope that the commission will address this soonest via the ongoing reforms.
.
"NCCE is, therefore, challenged to ensure that colleges of education will ,henceforth, produce specialised and right calibre of teachers to teach at the various levels of basic education.

"Similarly, NCCE is called upon to rise up to the challenge posed by the spate of illegal colleges of education operating in different parts of the country,'' he said.

The vice-president said that the Federal Government was committed to improving the fortunes of teachers and the teaching profession.
