Nouakchott, Mauritania - Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is doing well after being "accidentally" shot by a soldier earlier this month, the head of the National Assembly said on Wednesday.
"He told me he is doing well and his health is improving," Messaoud Ould Boulkheir told a press conference after a telephone conversation with the president earlier on Wednesday.
"The conversation assured me he is in possession of all his mental faculties. His voice is normal, except he sounds a bit weaker than usual."
Abdel Aziz on Friday assured the nation he was recovering well in a televised address.
Boulkheir could not say when Abdel Aziz would return to the country, or where he was since leaving a military hospital in Paris on October 24.
He said the West African nation "is living through an ordeal which calls for more unity and cohesion from all of us, majority and opposition, and less quarrels and division, because the maturity of a people is measured by its behaviour in the face of adversity".
The opposition, which had suspended its anti-regime protests in the wake of the shooting, will hold a gathering on Thursday to demand a health report and a solution to the "political vacuum" in the president's absence. - Sapa-AFP
