IBADAN — The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has said 1,157 duplicated vehicle chassis numbers, 33, 000 duplicated number plates and 3,585 duplicated vehicle engine numbers are in circulation in the country.
Abubakar, who spoke through his Deputy, Abdelrahman Akano at the annual press week of the Oyo State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, said it was as a result of this that the police came up with the idea of Police Biometrics Central Motor Registry, BCMR.
He explained that the police had discovered that most stolen vehicles are first smuggled out of the country and later sold in Benin Republic as second hand.
Abubakar noted that the BCMR is customized and would make it difficult for such criminal transactions.
