Members of the House of Representatives yesterday expressed worry over the security of the National Assembly complex located at the Three Arms zone which they described as "porous and unsafe" from terrorist attack.
Adopting a motion on last Sunday's attack on the Special Anti-Robbery Squad Headquarters in Abuja by armed gunmen, MPs lamented that the spate of insecurity in Nigeria. In a motion under matters of urgent national importance, Rep. Abubakar Momoh (ACN, Edo), said the insecurity had reached a level where no security facility was safe again.
Momoh said the Tuesday robbery in Auchi which claimed the lives of three soldiers, policemen and civilians clearly showed that insecurity in the country has gotten out of hand.
"I see these people coming to the National Assembly very soon," Momoh warned.
Rep. Raphael Nnanna (PDP, Imo) said the successful operation by gunmen who invaded the headquarters of SARS was an indication that security personnel lacked the capacity to stem the tide of insecurity in the country.
When contacted, police spokesman Frank Mba said Inspector General Mohammed Abubakar has directed police to beef up security across the country and all "units are placed on red alert."
He said the police "are not only working with other security agencies to restore normalcy but with a number of stakeholders. Nigerians have no reason to panic as adequate security measures have been put in place to fastball similar occurrence."
