Title: Poll: London Olympics cheered up gloomy Brits

By Ian Johnston, NBC NewsMore than three-quarters of British people thought the London Olympics did “a valuable job in cheering up a country in hard times,” according to a new survey.

Follow @NBCNewsWorld (https://twitter.com/NBCNewsWorld)  The Guardian/ICM poll, published Wednesday (http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/dec/25/britain-end-of-year-olympic-verdict), found that 78 percent of people agreed the 2012 Games were a good idea, but 20 percent thought the event was “a costly and dangerous distraction.”

The survey found similar levels of support across different age groups, social class and every region – apart from Scotland.

But even there 69 percent of people were in favor of the Games, with 31 percent against.
