Accra - Two people died and seven others were injured in a hand grenade attack upon a food shack in the Dadaab refugee camp in eastern Kenya, local media reported Saturday.

The explosion happened late on Friday, according to Kenyan newspaper The Nation.

Those injured by shrapnel were reportedly taken to a nearby hospital run by the non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders.

Dadaab is located near the Kenya-Somalia border and hosts the world's largest refugee population, of about 450 000 people. Occupants are mostly Somalis who have fled violence and drought after more than two decades of civil war.

Kenya has suffered a string of bomb, grenade and gun attacks - including at the Dadaab camp - since it sent troops into southern Somalia in 2011 in a bid to drive out Islamist al-Shabaab rebels. - Sapa-dpa
