Internet activist Aaron Swartz committed suicide two days ago in Newyork City.
In July 2011 he was accused of stealing 4 million documents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Jstor, an archive of scientific journals and academic papers. The authorities claimed that he broke into a restricted-access computer wiring closet at MIT and accessed that network without authorization.
Swartz faced a maximum of $4 million in fines and more than 50 years in prison if had been convicted.
As noted by his friend who also mentioned his battle with depression, he was important in making the world a better place. At his age he had sold one company he founded called Infogami and also founded the nonprofit group Demand Progress.
