Title: UNESCO Approves USD 15.3 Million Research Grant for Kwara State University

The United Nations Economic, Scientific Organization (UNESCO)  has approved a Research  Grant worth about 15.3 million dollars ,to be utilized over a six year period to establish the UNESCO Chair for Alternative Energy  Programme at the Kwara State University. The grant known as a  UNESCO Chair is for  research  in alternative energy, is to be handled by the kwara State University, Center for Ecological and Environmental Research, Management and Studies (CEERMS).           

The Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University, Professor Abdul Rasheed Na ' Allah  explained that the Chair will serve as the pivot initiative for development of educational training,research,and economic growth for exploring alternative energy in Nigeria.

Earlier  the Vice Chancellor's forum at the UNESCO Office in  Paris had provided a platform for the Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University,  Professor Abdul Rasheed Na'Allah to express the intent of the Kwara State University to seek for the establishment of a chair programme in Alternative Energy at the State University.

This was based on the Country's need to address energy supplements and combat Global warming  by, exploring alternative energy  abundant in Nigeria. 

UNESCO then granted the request for a Chair programme at the State University to cover biomass digestion, waste to energy,solar,wind,biomass briquette.bio fuel and floating wind farm energy. This is aimed  at addressing the national and  regional development goals of alternative energy programme with a broad concern for the vision 2020 programme of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
