Post by: iolsa on Jan 30, 2013, 04:30 AM
Pretoria - South Africa expressed solidarity on Tuesday with the Republic of Seychelles, where hundreds of families were displaced during heavy rains and high tides.

International relations spokesman Clayson Monyela said President  Zuma sent a message to this effect to the Seychelles government.

It read: "It is with great regret and sadness that President Jacob Zuma and the people of SA have learnt of the news of the tropical depression that hit Seychelles, devastating three districts of the Mahé Island on Sunday."

Up to 350 families were displaced or remain unsheltered as they wait for their homes to be rehabilitated.

Experts were assessing the damage in order to establish the immediate needs of the people.

Monyela said South Africa was hoping the affected families and the entire population of the Seychelles would unite in responding to the disaster. - Sapa
