A GROUP, Women Organisation on Gender Issues, has decried what it called the spate of selective justice in the way punishments are meted to public officers who are perceived to have erred in the discharge of their duties, with special reference to women.
National Coordinator of the group, Stella Odife, who was a deputy governor in Anambra State, told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that the way the Federal Government usually comes hard on erring women in positions of authority, can no longer be accepted.
She specifically cited the recent directive by the Federal Government that the former Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS), Rose Chinyere Uzoma, should retire before her scheduled date of retirement as a result of some recruitment she was claimed to have done into the NIS.
Odife said the group perceived that the punishment was meted out to Uzoma because she is a woman and wondered how many male chief executives have been sanctioned for carrying out employment activities in the agencies where they held sway.
She called on President Goodluck Jonathan to allow Uzoma retire properly and honorably and bestow on her whatever national honour that befits someone who has served her country meritoriously for 35 years. Odife noted that if Mrs. Uzoma were a bad person from the onset, she would not have reached the pinnacle of her career.
