Job Title: Reporter

Location: Abuja, Nigeria

Organisation: Channels Television (Channels TV)

Main duties:

•   Collects and analyses information about newsworthy events to write news stories for broadcast. Receives assignment or evaluates news leads and news tips to develop story idea.

•   Gathers and verifies factual information regarding the story through interviews, observation and research.

•   Organize material, determines slant or emphasis, and writes story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.

•   May monitor police, fire agencies as well as other news communications to obtain story leads.

•   May take photographs or shoot videos to illustrate stories.

•   May edit or assist in editing videos for broadcast.

•   May appear on television programs when conducting taped or filmed interview narration.

•   May give live reports or commentaries from site of event, or mobile device.

•   May transmit information to news writers for story writing.

•   May specialize in one type of reporting, such as sports, energy, political affairs, police activities, entertainment, etc.

•   May be assigned to outlying areas or foreign countries and be designated correspondent or foreign correspondent.

•   Will review and evaluate notes taken about event aspects in order to isolate pertinent facts and details.

•   Will determine a story's emphasis, length and format and organize materials accordingly.

•   Will arrange interviews with people who can provide information about a story.

•   Will research and analyze background information related to stories in order to be able to provide complete and accurate information.

•   Will check reference materials, such as books, news files, or public records to obtain facts.

•   Will investigate breaking news developments, such as human interest stories.

•   Will revise work to meet editorial approval or to fit time or space requirements.

•    Will gather information about events through research, interviews, experiences or attendance at political, news sports, artistic, social or other factions.

•   Will discuss issues with editors to establish priorities or positions.

•   Will report on news stories for broadcast, describing the background and detail of events.

•   Will research on specialized fields such as medicine, science and technology, politics, foreign affairs, business, education, etc.

•   Will review, copy and correct errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines

•   Transmit news stories or reporting information from remote locations using equipment such as phones and modems.

Education:

•   University degree in Mass Communication or any related field.

•   Minimum of 3-5 years' experience as a news reporter.

Requirements:

•   Passion for news and creative thinker with great communication and writing skills.

•   Ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with other staff members.

•   Familiarity with electronic news gathering.

•   Computer exposure, good phone etiquette.

Employment is subject to passing the pre-employment screening and medicals.
