THE Human Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a pro-democracy group, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to take a drastic action aimed at unraveling the mystery behind the discovery of dozens of floating corpse on the Ezu river in Anambra State.
In a statement endorsed jointly by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Officer, Miss Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said it has given the Federal Government 21 days to take cogent and verifiable measures to set up an independent judicial commission on the matter or it will mobilise all major civil society organisations in the South East to stage series of advocacy campaign which may culminate in the filing of a petition against President Jonathan at the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands, by March 2013.
HURIWA stated: "Nigerians can recall vividly that last year we alerted the Federal Government of alleged systematic extra-legal execution of suspected members of MASSOB but the Federal Government never took any action to put a stop to these dastardly criminal acts of extra judicial killings by the police.
"Now that the official structure of MASSOB has come up with empirical evidence that those corpses found at Ezu River were their members arrested alive by the police and executed even before charging them to court, the Nigerian government including the National Human Rights Commission must initiate independent probe to fish out the police operatives responsible for this genocide so as to bring them for trial for mass murder before a competent court of law.
