FEDERAL Government has deployed state–of- the- art cancer screening equipment to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Rivers State.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Aaron Ojule, who disclosed this when the National Good Governance Tour (NGGT) inspected facilities at the hospital said that the deployment was in line with the government's plan to upgrade teaching hospitals across the federation to standard so as to discourage Nigerians from seeking medical treatment abroad.
He explained that the cancer screening centre has standard facilities for diagnostic and treatment of cancer cases like cervical cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and liver cancer through the use of colposcopy machine, ultra sound machine, mammography machine and ELISA equipment.
Ojule said that UPTH has 750 beds being managed by 150 specialist consultants, 400 resident doctors and about 200 interns in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical laboratory sciences and radiography, adding that hospital is also running post-basic training programmes in nursing and community health.
He revealed that other projects such as multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis reference laboratory built in collaboration with Family Health International, molecular diagnostics/training laboratory and a new 30 suite dental clinic, equipped to handle dental implant surgeries, have been completed.
Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, said that the present administration is working to create first class facilities in all the teaching hospitals in the country to discourage Nigerians from seeking medical treatment abroad, and encourage the country's specialists abroad to come home and practice.
