(http://fmi.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/DSC_00403-300x199.jpg) The speedy progress being recorded on the reconstruction of the Benin-Ore-Shagamu expressway has been attributed to steady and adequate funding secured from the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) initiated by the present Administration.
Federal Controller of Works, Engr. Dennis Orji disclosed this on Sunday in Edo State while briefing members of the National Good Governance Tour on the status of the job at the Benin-Ofosu stretch of the project.
According to him, funding from the SURE-P has facilitated the improvement in the monthly output of the construction company, Reynolds Construction Co. (Nig) Ltd.
The Controller of Works further informed that due to the rehabilitation work on the Benin – Ore Road, travel time on the route has been drastically cut down from 12 hours to 4 hours.
Engr. Orji noted that the road was one of the major ones linking the South East and South South Geopolitical zones of the country recalling that "There was a time the road was in bad shape and the Federal Government felt that such an important road needs to be repaired to make sure that economic activities between the South East, South South and the West is restored.
"As a result, in 2007 the contract on the road was awarded to cover phase one which starts from Ofosu facing the Benin Town for 50kilometers and it was completed in 2009″, Orji noted, adding that work on phase two of the project has begun.
Also speaking, the Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen said "I am promising Nigerians that by the time we complete this project (the favoured Benin-Ore Road), the total alignment and what we will be doing on the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, Nigerains will be able to move from Benin to Lagos in 2hours 45minutes.
